What each mouse button does
The view lives on the right mouse button. The left one only picks.
Step 1
Orbit
Right-drag swings the view around whatever you're looking at. In a 2D pane it pans instead — a plan has nothing to orbit.

Step 2
Pan and zoom
Shift + right-drag slides the view sideways. If your mouse has a clickable scroll wheel, pressing it and dragging does the same. Rolling the wheel zooms instead.
Two commands aim it for you: type ZF (Zoom Fit) to fit the whole model on screen, or ZS (Zoom Selected) to fill it with just what you have selected.

Step 3
Select and context menu
Left-click picks one thing. Shift-click — or Ctrl/Cmd-click — adds and removes. Drag from empty space for a box selection.
A right-click that doesn't drag opens the context menu instead.
Esc clears the selection and closes the context menu.
